PLEASE read the instructions carefully if you are updating from an older version ...
Every time I release a new version people post here that their game is broken or my mod doesn't work. It works just fine, you must follow the steps very carefully and don't skip anything.
You should use the Remove Better Vampires.bat file BEFORE installing to make certain that you have no vampire-related loose files in your Skyrim\Data folder. If you do .... they will overwrite my BSA and my mod will not work ...
If using a mod organizer/loader make certain no other mods are loading loose files that affect vampires - especially PlayerVampireQuestScript! A loose file will overwrite my .bsa and it
willbreak things!
I am sorry, but I will no longer support people with BV if they are using Race Compatibility. You will have to talk to TMPhoenix.
You have to follow his instructions perfectly or it breaks my mod. They are complex and if you made a mistake you will have to seek his help. His mod works fine, but custom races inherently add more problems. Many issues have resulted from his mod (and people not setting it up properly) and I tire of defending my mod when it works fine. If you have an issue, it is 95% mod conflict or user error.

Version 8.7 is released!
A new save is recommended, OR you have to follow the steps to blank the mod and make a "clean save" and update.

1) Rest/wait INSIDE for 24hr in the game - this will allow any NPCs you have fed upon, or used Seduction on, time to recuperate.
2) Use my MCM - Troubleshooting and Cleanup page (or my customization power) and click on "BLANK Better Vampires Mod".
3) If using my MCM, exit it to have the mod blanked.
4) Wait until told the blanking is complete, then save your game (it must be a real save, not a quick save).
5) Exit the game.
6) Uninstall and delete the old version of my mod (completely DELETE it from the Skyrim\Data and Skyrim\Data\Scripts folders). I use MO to remove mods, but you can check the files section and use my "Remove Better Vampires" batch file - it will ENSURE everything is gone.
7) Download and install my latest mod version using NMM, MO, or Bethesda.net (for PC or XBox One).
8) Start the game and load your saved game from step 4.
9) Use my MCM - Troubleshooting and Cleanup page (or my customization power) and click on "Reset Sanguinare Vampiris".
10) Customize my mod with the MCM, customization power, or console commands.
11) You were infected in step 9, now you must wait 3 days for your disease to run its course and you will become a stage 1 Vampire (fully fed).
* You must feed once on a living victim to have your proper rank set the first time.
OPTIONAL STEPS
12) Make a new save after you turn into a vampire the first time (it must be a real save, not a quick save).
13) Exit the game.
14) Use the Script Cleaner (or Skyrim Tools for SE) on the save from step 12 (to ensure the cleanest slate possible).
15) Start the game and load your cleaned saved game from step 14.
- Vampire Vision will now have a darker and slower shading effect on those you have recently fed on and are weakened (if you feed on them twice in less than 24hr they are drained and die).
- General Option in the MCM allows you to turn off animations for sneak and corpse feeding if you wish.
- Knight-Paladin Gelebor has been edited slightly. 'IsGhost' and 'Invulnerable' properties have been removed so you can feed on him (he is still essential though).
- Thirsk the Riekling Chief has been edited slightly. 'ActorTypeNPC' has been added so you can feed on him.
- Praestare and Tollere (turning and curing) will now be available at a lower rank (Blooded Vampire) so you can have more fun even sooner.
- Those you turn into vampires will not feed on others (if enabled) if you are in dialogue at the moment - they will wait.
- Turning others into Vampires and Enthralling NPCs has been reworked. 30 can be turned and 20 can be enthralled. The MCM will now track (at the bottom of the Status page) everyone you have turned and relay their current location.
- Turned and Enthralled NPCs can be followers - IF they have the proper voicetype (vanilla game limitation). Use the Relationship Dialogue Overhaul mod to allow all default voicetypes to have follower options.
- Enthralled NPCs and those you turn into Vampires will not be removed from previous factions by default - they will retain speech options etc.
- Enthralled NPCs will fight for you.
- The game itself will not keep NPC appearance for those you turn when quitting and loading for the first time, but they are scripted to get back their vampire looks on entering a cell or if you simply wait an hour. Wait a bit and they should be fine.
- Option has been added to the Miscellaneous tab of the MCM to choose whether NPCs will be removed from all previous factions (if you want).
- Tollere will cure those you have turned and NOW it will also free the mind of those you have enthralled (cures them ...).
- An enhanced version of Seduction is now available at Master Vampire Rank that will last for 15 seconds (a bit longer) and allow it to work on undead and other Vampires (this will be very useful when you get Amaranth ...).
- Amaranth Perk has been adjusted so you can feed on Vampires who have been hit with Seduction II.
- VL Drain (ball attack) as a VL has been adjusted to make it a little more balanced with magicka cost and damage to health.
- VL Drain (ball attack) that is available in regular vampire form (as Nightlord) has also been adjusted to make it a little more balanced with magicka cost, health drain, and damage to health.
- The BV Options Power (instead of using the MCM) has been updated, but it still lacks many features that the MCM has. Please use the MCM.
NEW EXPANSION TO LIFE AS A VAMPIRE
- Powerful feeding victims (25 in total) exist across Skyrim. Their blood has traces of the et'Ada and feeding on them will enhance current abilities and bestow new ones. When you are close to such an individual, you will sense them and a message will be shown. Also, Reveal Auras and Vampiric Vision will highlight them for you (in yellow).
- Power that you receive from special feeding victims can be tracked in the MCM (at the bottom of the Status page) and when looking at Active Effects. These can be individually deactivated in the MCM if you find ones you don't like.
- A journal explaining the discovery of these traces of power in people's blood can be found in Sybille Stentor's room in the Blue Palace, in a room beside Harkon's Court, on a table in the Arcanaeum, and on the body of the author itself ...

8.7 SE was Re-uploaded (for Xbox too)

- I fixed a value on the shout recovery special power from feeding on Ulfric ... it was 20 and was supposed to be 0.2.
- I fixed a shader on the special feeding victims and added keywords to them so it should work on XBox (without SKSE). I also adjusted flags on reference aliases for turned victims and enthralled victims. This should make them more permanent (ongoing mission).Locked

In my opinion, I expend too many blood points going invisible to feed than it's worth. So, I extracted the BSA file and loaded the mod into the creation kit. After a few hours researching the scripts and getting a handle on how things work, I modified the mod successfully. I just think that if a low level NPC vampire can do it multiple times in its own fights, then I should be able to do it as well.
EDIT:
The higher your rank the less powers should cost in my thinking, just as costs for spells go down as the mage gets higher. I saw in the script where I could add-in those checks and it works like a charm. If given permission, perhaps I could bundle those edits in a plugin patch.

I've always found the features to restrict power use to be just a touch too limiting. Turning them off and spamming all kinds of busted powers has it's own problems of course. So I gotta second this idea, a less limiting version of the normal restraints on power use would fit like a glove.

I altered more of the scripts where the key powers will cost normal when you first are able to get them, but scale down as you go up the ranks. If you are the most powerful vampire to walk the world, as the message text would suggest, then you should be able to spam the crap out of whatever you want with regards to the lower-end powers.

I would like to make the mortal's mask a toggle ability and remove the timer, barr running out of magicia.
I see that the duration is set to 900 in TesV.
Is their an easy way for me to do this in TesV, I've not used it for a long time, and am no expert.

I used Real Flying wings along with earlier versions of this mod. However, this new version prevents the wings from being applied. When I blanked the mod and drank the wings potion, the wings applied as normal. I think that this new update prevents the wings from being attacked because it attaches something in that spot. Load order changing doesn't do anything. Any suggestions or work around?

Hello, I have a compatibility issue with Requiem Roleplay Overhaul. I can't feed, cannot gain ranks and all npcs are permanently hostile. I have tried adjusting the load order in accordance with the FAQ, I have tried wiping the mod and following all the instructions both in the MCM and in the FAQ guide.
Pleas help I would really like to combine the mods.

I'm having a strange issue. I haven't played in over a year so yesterday I decided to play again. I loaded the game, loaded my favorite vampire character and everything was fine. I played an hour or two and then quit the game. I had a good time so I loaded the game again today, same character, but this time for some reason night vision wouldn't work properly. I'd activate it, it would activate for a second and then deactivate. This confused the heck out of me. I made no changes since yesterday but now night vision is acting weird. I kept trying and every now and then the normal version of night vision would stay on but the sneak version never would. I decided to try a reinstall of the mod and since I had an older version of BV I decided I may as well upgrade. So I did and the problem persisted. Everything else works fine as far as I can tell but for some reason night vision deactivates shortly after activation. It just had to be night vision too, one of the most useful and immersive abilities for a vampire character, especially for a rogue/assassin build. I've been playing Skyrim with BV for years and while I've had problems from time to time this one has never been one of them. Usually it was something that following the troubleshooting guide would fix. This time however it didn't solve the issue. Has anyone else had this issue and have a solution?
Edit: I ran the save cleaner tool on it and that seems to have fixed it. There were some scripts from the Undeath mod still in there. I must have removed that mod at some point altho I don't remember doing that. I must have tho and using the script cleaner on it fixed the problem.

Hey thanks for all the hard work, I've used this mod since I started modding Skyrim and it's still my favourite mod of all time. I'm running into an issue with the special feeding victim powers though. It seems to work fine and I get their related special ability but after a while (a minute or so) the power disappears. I'm not sure what's causing it but I should clarify I'm using add sacrosanct spells to better vampires, not sure if that's the cause.

Forgive me if this is redundant or common knowledge, I'm hoping to save other people's time investigating this by posting my experience. This mod conflicts with Ultimate Combat, specifically causing issues with jump height and weapon damage doubling or being set to 0 (not only in the interface, but actually doing zero damage).
Since BV is clearly the better mod I suggest uninstalling UC. It worked for me after going through a number of load orders, new games, and trips through the various conflict tools.

Use my MCM to disable my mod jump height - it will conflict if another mod alters it too.
The weapon damage to 0 is not my mod, but I do remember from a long time ago what the issue was .... dammit not sure.

If it helps, I managed to get the 0 damage effect again, without Ultimate Combat, after enabling hotkeys. Wonder if it's a SKSE issue. disabling hotkeys hasn't seen it return.
